With legal highs banned from tomorrow shops around Wellington selling party pills and synthetic cannabis have reported a buying boom.
The Psychoactive Substances Amendment Bill, passed last night under urgency, effectively bans synthetic drugs.
Since the bill was announced last Sunday Naenae T owner Kai Guo said he had been selling about three times as many synthetic highs as usual, including some customers who had been bulk buying up to $100 worth of product at a time.
But stock was low and business was slow today, Guo said.
He had heard reports from customers and people within the legal high industry of users spending thousands of dollars on stockpiling sprees.
Discount T on Lower Hutt’s Queens Drive was doing a brisker trade with a steady stream of customers taking advantage of a 70 per cent discount on the products.
Two discount tobacco shops in Porirua also offering discounts on synthetics were doing reasonable trade, however most customers were buying cigarettes.
From tomorrow it will be an offence to possess, supply or sell synthetic highs and those who have them are advised to return them to the retailer they bought them from.
